02- Tech and mics in podcasting for grumpy old bears

Grumpy Old Bears podcast show

In this episode of Grumpy Old Bears, we discuss the benefits of using certain microphones and equipment to record the audio portions of our participation in this episode– such as the portable handy recorder of the Zoom H1n, used by Mr. Bear (as you can see in the photo); also the Zoom H4n currently used by Fred (that is, the older model of 2008 and NOT the latest model called the Zoom H4n Pro); and the Samson Go-mic, used by Matt. We were asked to highlight the mic and recorder used by Mr. Bear, since he feels that this is his show.

By the way, for your information, there is a review of the Zoom H1n, which was done earlier in the podcast show, The Podcast Reporter, in a very loose, impromptu and casual method (almost like a stream-of-consciousness method) in the following audio player and at the following URL:

Now, we can discuss the benefits of the recorder when grumpy old bears get together — that is, each one of grumps will be using a different recorder and/or microphone when they are recording their podcast in a double-ender style:

  • One will use the Samson go-mic (that’s Matt);
  • Another will use the Zoom H4n (that’s Sgt. Fred); and
  • Mr. Bear will be using the Zoom H1n.

What Sgt Fred and Matt use, respectively, to record their audio:

What Mr. Bear uses to record his podcast audio:

As you will hear in this audio episode, the discussion is informal, casual, unrehearsed and spontaneous — and a key theme will be how each co-host uses his audio recorder equipment and then how they deliver it to be included and synchronized into the post-production process that will deliver a final mp3 file for posting on a WordPress blog as a podcast. In addition, the process of using the technique of a double-ender is also mentioned.

However, the show notes are a sub-topic that also is discussed briefly with comments from the co-hosts.

Of course, Mr. Bear is really grumpy and is in his corner, pouting and just giving his grumps — as he has to have Sgt. Fred prepare everything for him in order to participate, because as he says “I’m the boss.”

We hope that you, as a possible aspiring or novice podcaster will get value from the discussion, especially if you are considering obtaining one of these devices (and by the way, the Zoom H4n series has a newer model, which you can learn about on the web, as well — it is called the Zoom H4n  Pro Portable Handy Recorder.)

For us in the Grumpy Old Bears show, we can recommend these three different types of equipment for creating your podcast hardware assets (or including them in your array), because we have seen the value that they have delivered to us.

By the way, in no way have we been encouraged by any of the makers or sellers of the podcast devices discussed, above. No compensation has been given — in fact, the vendors and creators of the assets may be happily surprised with this type of review.

We appreciate your interest, and while Mr. Bear continues to pout, Matt and I do thank you for your attention.
